Collecting large amounts of data can be challenging. Delayed supplier responses, missing records, or confusing data formats can all slow things down. This guide covers common data collection issues and provides simple solutions to keep you on track.
1. Issue: Missing or Delayed Supplier Data
Suppliers may not always provide data quickly, especially if they’re unfamiliar with carbon reporting.
Solution: Reach out to suppliers as early as possible and explain the importance of the data for your reporting. If data is delayed or blocked, reach out to the My Emissions team to discuss whether using industry averages or estimates can be a short-term bridge.
Tip: look here for details on preparing your team (or suppliers) for data collection.
2. Issue: Inconsistent Units Across Data Sources
Data from various departments or suppliers may use different units, like litres for fuel in some places and gallons in others.
Solution: Convert all units to a standard measurement early on, with mass and volumetric units being preferred (e.g. kg, litres, instead of "each"). For example, decide to log all fuel use in litres and all waste in kilograms, converting as needed.
3. Issue: Unclear or Partial Waste Data
Sometimes, waste contractors don’t provide complete data on waste volumes or disposal methods, making it challenging to apply the correct emissions factors.
Solution: Request monthly reports from waste contractors detailing types and amounts of waste, along with disposal methods. If details are unavailable, My Emissions can recommend general emissions factors. This applies to other categories too.
4. Issue: Lack of Understanding About Data Requirements Among Teams
If team members aren’t familiar with carbon accounting, they may struggle to provide accurate data.
Solution: offer kick-off calls and clear instructions for each department. Explain what data is needed and why it’s essential.
