What is the Packaging sub-category?

For food businesses, packaging can be a significant sub-component of Purchased Goods & Services (PG&S) under Scope 3 emissions.

Specifically, packaging refers to the disposable packaging items or materials you purchase to produce, package, serve, store or transport your products. Some common examples would be:

  • Shelf-ready packaging for products

  • Disposable serving containers, utensils and other takeaway packaging

  • Cardboard boxes and tape for bulk storage and transportation.

This category does not include non-disposable equipment such as cookware and utensils. At present we do not support disposable items unrelated to food, such as toilet paper.

What Do You Need to Do?

The good news is that My Emissions does most of the heavy lifting for you! You can simply upload a purchase report for your packaging, then our AI-powered import tool will automatically interpret pack sizes and quantities, and match your packaging to our database of standard packaging items and sizes.

You can source this information directly from your purchase orders or supplier invoices, often accessible through your procurement or accounting systems.
