Scope 1 covers direct emissions from sources that your business directly owns or controls. This means emissions from things like company vehicles and cooling systems that use refrigerants. Gathering this data accurately is essential because it measures emissions that you can control firsthand.
Practical Guidance
Fuel Use: list any fuel used for on-site generators, owned delivery vehicles, or other company-owned equipment. Include both mobile combustion sources (e.g., vans, forklifts) and stationary sources (e.g., diesel heaters).
Refrigerant Use: record any leakages from refrigeration and air conditioning systems. This includes all units on-site, such as walk-in coolers or freezers.
Combustion Emissions: include emissions from boilers and heating equipment. Note that these emissions need to be recorded as a part of your heating operations if you burn any fuel on-site.
Fugitive Emissions: unintentional emission releases. For food companies, some of these are fermentation emissions or the usage of carbon dioxide extinguishers.
Data Collection Table
Type | Examples | Data to Collect | Data sources |
Stationary Combustion | On-site Boilers, ovens, generators using fossil fuels |
Mobile Combustion | Company-owned vehicles, trucks, forklifts |
Process Emissions | On-site industrial processes (e.g., fermentation, chemical processes) |
Fugitive Emissions | On-site Refrigerant leakage, natural gas leaks, methane from wastewater |
Agricultural Emissions | On-site livestock, fertilisers, land-use changes, crop yields |
Waste Management | On-site incineration or waste treatment |

Example: Fresh Bites Deli
At Fresh Bites Deli, the facilities team tracks monthly fuel use for their owned delivery vans in litres. They also keep a refrigerant log for their walk-in coolers, noting any leaks or maintenance.
