Building an accurate Company Carbon Footprint (CCF) means understanding three key types of emissions: Scope 1, 2, and 3.
These Scopes each capture a different part of your carbon impact, covering everything from direct emissions on-site to those occurring across your entire value chain. Food companies, in particular, often see most of their emissions in Scope 3 (often as high as 80-90% of overall emissions), tied to ingredients, packaging, and waste from your purchased food and drinks.
Scope 1: direct emissions from sources that you own or directly control.
Scope 2: indirect emissions from the energy you purchase.
Scope 3: all other indirect emissions linked to your value chain, covering 15 categories such as purchased goods, business travel, and waste disposal.
In the next few articles, we break down each Scope, explain how they apply to food companies, and provide examples to clarify what data is needed.
Our tool applies the emissions factors and performs necessary calculations for you—your main task is to gather complete and accurate data for each Scope.
