Accurate and complete data is the foundation of a reliable carbon footprint report.

Here’s a quick overview of what you'll need to measure:

  • Scope 1 (direct emissions): emissions from sources owned or controlled by your company, such as fuel use in company vehicles or on-site combustion

  • Scope 2 (indirect emissions from purchased energy): this covers emissions from the energy you purchase, like electricity or heating, where emissions occur off-site.

  • Scope 3 (indirect emissions across your value chain): these are all other indirect emissions, including purchased goods (like raw materials), transportation, waste disposal, and other upstream and downstream activities.

Data Collection Tips

  • Start with the easier data: begin with simpler, readily available data, like electricity or utility bills, to build momentum before tackling more complex categories.

  • Engage suppliers early: data can take time to gather, especially when requiring supplier certificates or documentation (e.g., electricity emission factor certificates). Reach out to your suppliers early to avoid delays.

  • Prioritise primary data: for any categories you measure, using primary data (first-hand, measured values from your own activities) is important for report accuracy and credibility, especially if you plan to use this report for external certifications or regulatory compliance.

  • Double-check units and completeness: confirm that units (e.g., kilograms, tonnes) are correct and data for each relevant site and category is complete. Avoiding common errors, like decimal misplacements or incomplete data entries, ensures a reliable report.

Note: Accurate and complete data entry is your team’s responsibility and essential for the reliability of your report. Inaccuracies can affect report acceptance by third parties or regulatory frameworks, so please ensure all data is carefully collected and validated.
